Investigator Charges – Is It Expensive to Hire a Private Investigator  In Australia?

A modern-day private detective agency can help with so many different investigations from finding a missing person to uncovering fraud, or carrying out surveillance for a business matter or personal matter –  and the usefulness of the investigator is becoming more and more well-known every day. However, there are still some people out there who refrain from taking advantage of these very useful services because they think it’s going to cost them an arm and a leg- and it’s true, investigator charges can be difficult to predict.

While the cost does vary from one private investigator firm to the next, the price you’ll pay for their general services is perhaps lower than you might think. On average, you’ll pay anywhere between a very reasonable $80-$150 per hour, with some additional travel costs potentially being incurred depending on the job in question. Most investigator charges are identified to a client before they start, but make sure you are clear at the outset of your investigation. Some private investigation firms are a little sneaky with their costs and the bill at the end is nothing like what was expected when you started. Here at Integral Investigations, we are extremely open with our costing and there is NEVER a sneaky amount added at the end that you weren’t aware of. More detail on our actual investigator charges can be found  in another blog article here https://integralinvestigations.com.au/how-much-does-a-private-investigator-cost/

Fixed-Price Investigator Charges

It’s not offered by every company, but customers who are concerned about investigator charges spiraling out of control can sometimes gain access to fixed-price private detective services. These services come with the peace of mind of knowing that there will be no nasty surprises lurking down the road. But not all assignments can work this way. For example, how could you know the investigator charges on a surveillance job unless you had set-in-cement fixed hours for the surveillance job? Surveillance investigation costs change depending on the hours done some assignments finish earlier than expected and some can go much longer than expected – an investigation firm surely can’t fix a cost on this scenario unless the client knew they needed an exact 6 hours, or a precise 11.5 hours.

That said, a good, reputable firm will usually be extremely transparent about their investigator charges from the outset and if they’re not, it should set off alarm bells if you’re thinking of using them. Of course, if the services you are looking for are quite complex, they might not be able to give an accurate price straight away, so don’t assume that they’re trying to be underhanded when asking for time to cost things out. Not all investigations are straightforward and many can come back to an hourly rate with an unknown period of time required from beginning to end. Imagine a police investigation into a murder – some are solved in minutes, some days, some weeks, and some years! Some are never solved. This can be the same situation with a private investigator and we are reliant on your wallet to carry out the investigation.

Standard Fees Can Work Out Cheaper

You have to think laterally sometimes to understand what type of PI services to go for and this will largely be determined by the type of assistance you’re after. For example, if you’re wanting to find out if your partner is cheating and a private investigator surveils your husband or wife, the time they take to find the evidence needed is key. If a result is obtained within an hour, all of a sudden that fixed-priced PI service is looking a bit pricey, but if it takes 6-8 hours, the picture changes again. The best thing to do is to have a good, thorough chat with the agency representative you’re talking to come up with the best solution. Often it’s a case of playing it by ear and the success you’re having or not having can guide you from there.

The fact that modern private detective agencies use dash cams and other discrete video surveillance equipment also mean that nothing is ever missed, so jobs that entail following people tend to get resolved quickly as a result – if the offending party does something incriminating, that is! We can’t catch them out if they aren’t doing anything wrong  🙂

Clear, Transparent & Appropriate Pricing

We’re not going to sugarcoat the fact that if you’re coming to a PI with a complex problem with many moving parts, it can end up being quite expensive. That said, when a quick resolution is found, private investigators can be really cheap, so the variables at play will determine the price you pay. That’s why a frank and comprehensive chat about investigator charges at the beginning is a really good idea.
